Psychometric Test

A psychometric test is concerned with educational and/or psychological attainment. The psychometric test will attempt to measure knowledge, abilities, attitudes and personality traits and can include a verbal reasoning test, a numerical reasoning test and a personality profile. The psychometric test can have applications in many varied fields where, for example, it is important to match people to certain roles, or pointing a person in the right educational direction so that they are more likely to fulfil their full potential.

Part of the role of the psychometric test professional is to do with the construction and validation of measurement instruments such as questionnaires, tests and personality assessments. The instruments of measurement for a psychometric test are constantly undergoing a process of refinement as the psychometric test professional is attempting to measure something that they cannot see or physically measure, they can only measure the physical actions and responses of individuals. As such, the tests that are used are constantly being refined to reduce any margin of error.

There are two research tasks of the psychometric test professional: the construction of instruments and procedures for measurement; and the development and refinement of theoretical approaches to measurement.

Research into the construction of instruments of procedure for measurement, as already hinted at, is a process of constant refinement for the psychometric test professional. This area of research deals with the practicalities of measurement.

Research into the development and refinement of theoretical approaches to measurement is slightly different as it is research into more abstract ideas rather than practicalities. Here, the psychometric test professional researches the possibilities of what and how to measure and to ever refine the accuracy of the psychometric test.
