Personality Profile

Compiling a personality profile, like verbal reasoning tests and numerical reasoning tests, helps potential employers make the right recruitment choice for their purposes. A personality profile helps provide and insight into a person’s work styles and behaviour.

A personality profile attempts to measure the dimensions of personality. There are a few theories of personality with their particular model of personality. The most well know, and the one that many modern theories are build upon, is from the ancient world and proposes by Galen in about 190 AD. In Galen’s model there are two dimensions: Melancholic/Choleric and Phlegmatic/Sanguine.

In modern psychology and used in a personality profile, practitioners refer to the Five Factor Model. The five factors are: Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism (often referred to by its mnemonic OCEAN).

Each factor consists of a collection of traits that correlate together. For example, extraversion includes the traits excitement seeking, impulsiveness, and positive emotions.

• Openness can be summarised as appreciation for art, emotion, adventure, unusual ideas, curiosity and variety of experience.
• Conscientiousness can be described as a tendency to show self-discipline, act dutifully, aim for achievement and planned rather than spontaneous behaviour.
• Extraversion can be described as energy, positive emotions, surgency and the tendency to seek stimulation in the company of others.
• Agreeableness is a tendency to be compassionate and cooperative rather than suspicious and antagonistic towards others.
• Neuroticism is a tendency to experience unpleasant emotions easily, such as anger, anxiety, depression and vulnerability.

A personality profile is used by employers as part of the psychometric test to match the right person to the job and has been shown to be related to job performance, motivation and job satisfaction, so is a useful tool for the psychometric test professional.
